Adding Minutes to the Day

This crazy winter has caused us to have 6 snow days already. Two days are built into our calendar, this leaves 4 to be made up. Please note the following changes:
*School day will be lengthened starting Monday, Feb. 18, this will make up 2 of the days. Middle and High school hours will be 8:07-3:22 and elementary will be 8:10-3:15. Buses will arrive 5 minutes earlier with this new schedule.
*Students WILL be in school on March 8
*Last day for students will be in JUNE 7
Keep your fingers crossed that the ground hog was right and we have an early spring!!

8th Graders Learn About Chemical Reactions

Students watch chemical reactions

Spencer 8th grade science classes have been learning about physical and chemical reactions. We have completed many labs from combining baking soda with vinegar to test how temperature impacts glow sticks. But the most exciting lab by far was Elephant’s Toothpaste.

This experiment is called Elephant’s Toothpaste because the chemical reaction produces a large foamy mess that looks like toothpaste squirting out of a tube. The foam is actually filled with oxygen that came from the hydrogen peroxide. We used yeast as a catalyst to remove the oxygen and to increase the reaction rate.  The expressions on the student’s faces were priceless as the thick foam oozed or shot out of the bottle!
