What is the Spencer Science Club?
The Spencer Science Club began four years ago at Spencer High School. It is open to anyone with an interest in science in grades 7-12. Membership each year is between 40-50 students. Members meet monthly during the high school lunch period to discuss upcoming events.
The focus of the Science Club is two-fold – provide older high school students with opportunities to explore various areas of science, and generate enthusiasm and awareness of science in younger students. To achieve the first goal, Science Club members take a trip in the spring each year. The first trip was to Sea Life Aquarium in Minnesota and included a behind-the-scenes tour. The second trip was to Milwaukee and included stops at the Milwaukee Zoo and Discovery World. Last year the students traveled to Minnesota again for a tour of the aquarium and a visit to the Science Museum of Minnesota. This year the club plans to travel to Cave of the Mounds in Madison and is still discussing other places to visit. To address the second goal, members of the Science Club started visiting Spencer Kids Group last year with activities that pertained to a specific theme. Around Earth Day, my students helped SKG students make bird feeders and plant mini gardens using recycled materials. We are planning a trip on October 25 to do Halloween activities with the kids. The Science Club worked with the Art Club to host an Earth Day Art contest last year and there were participants from each grade. The Science Club also ran an Earth Day trivia contest in the junior high last year to help raise awareness with those students. This year the Science Club is furthering its goal of reaching out to younger students by sponsoring boys and girls in grades 7 and 8 to attend a STEM Career Exploration Day at UWSP. The boys’ workshop is in November and the girls’ is in February. The Science Club is paying half the registration fee for interested students.
The Spencer Science Club is also working to form Science Olympiad teams this year to compete at the regional and state level. There are about ten interested junior high students and twelve interested high school students.
To raise money for these activities, the Spencer Science club works in the concession stand for assigned volleyball and basketball games. We also have a bake sale during fall and spring parent teacher conferences each year. During the Spencerama parade last summer, the Spencer Science Club sold soda and water along the parade route. Students also sold Subway Community cards last summer.
