Our SEL team, which is comprised of teachers, counselors, and community members has been busy planning for a school year filled with OPTIMISM. This initiative is being implemented in an effort to cultivate a caring, participatory, and equitable learning environment that actively involves all of our Rocket students as well as our Rocket staff and Village.
What is SEL? It is the social and emotional learning process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
SEL is a deeply ingrained part of the way students and adults interact both in the classroom and out of it, and helps provide children with equitable, supportive, and welcoming environments.
More than two decades of research shows that SEL leads to 1) Increased academic achievement, 2) Improved behavior, 3) Strong return on investment.
What can parents do to promote their child’s SEL?
*Learn more about Spencer Schools initiative and adopt practices that reinforce your child’s SEL skill(s) at home.
*Talk to your child about the SEL word of month. What does it mean to them?
September’s word again is: Optimism. The definition, A feeling or belief that good things will happen.
It truly does take a Village to raise a child and so we are asking for your help. You’ll see the word of the month on social media, in the hallways, and at local businesses. The word of the month will also be seen on your child’s bus ride to and from school.
We’ll be publishing articles in the Village Voice to keep you apprised of our efforts. Please join in the fun, learning, and change this activity can bring to our community. It truly does take a Village to raise a child and we’re asking for your support.
Our hope is that this school year finds you filled with OPTIMISM.
